The 2010 Annual Members’ Show was held at the Carriage Barn September 20 – October 16, 2010 and featured the work of 153 members of the New Canaan Society for the Arts. Showcasing one work per artist, the result was a sizable collection of contemporary works in a wide range of styles and media. In keeping with the mission of the Carriage Barn, everyone who submitted work was represented. Creativity was encouraged at all levels, from inquisitive novice to experienced professional. The Carriage Barn takes pride in being a welcoming and inclusive organization with professional standards despite a modest budget.
Without stricture on subject or style and without the variable of a juror, we found out what is on the minds of our members. This Show was one of the most popular and expansive – a great start to the exhibition season. Though 2010 seemed less politically charged than in the past, there were commentaries on current events and observations on pressing issues. Other works were narrative driven, some immediately revealing, some more impenetrable but intriguing nonetheless. Many were simply lovely to behold. All were forged from the artist’s desire to express a feeling, communicate an idea or comprehend beyond the literal.
