SUMMARY:Intro To Eco-Printing Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Natural Printing is an exciting process in which fabric is bundled with foliage and steamed to achieve colorful permanent prints\, creating one-of-a-kind pieces. \nArtist Katya Lebrija will lead this two hour workshop to introduce the process of printing using a piece of 27”x27” cotton fabric.  Participants will experiment and learn how different plants make their unique mark on the fabric. \nYou'll design and create your "bundle" (which is how the fabric is actually printed) which is then steamed and unrolled to reveal your unique design.   \n$100 / person \nA follow-up Silk Scarf printing workshop will be held on May 2. \nIf you take both the introduction to Eco Printing Workshop (price $100) and the following Silk Scarf printing workshop on 5/2 (price $200) we can offer both workshops for a discounted price of $270. \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nI was born and raised in Mexico City\, where I obtained my Bachelor of Arts degree in Graphic Design from Universidad Anáhuac in 1995 and worked as a freelance graphic designer until December 1999\, when my husband and I moved our family to the United States. \nI have explored various artistic mediums\, from watercolors and acrylics to printmaking. My current artistic focus lies in mixed media. I am deeply engaged in creating pieces incorporating various materials\, including acrylics\, paper\, leftover monotypes\, fabric\, gesso\, ink\, charcoal\, and oil sticks. \nMy paintings have been featured in exhibitions in my home state of Connecticut\, Vermont\, New York City and my native Mexico City. In addition to participating in juried shows\, I have had the honor of hosting solo exhibitions and winning awards\, a testament to my growing recognition in the artistic space. \nI currently work in my home studio\, and also enjoy painting with a group of local artists in CT.

DESCRIPTION:To complement the "Visions" exhibition representing American realism\, and in partnership with The American Artists Professional League (AAPL) we are hosting a hands-on Watermedia Workshop for artists of all levels and experience from beginner to professional.\nThe workshop will focus on Holbein’s Watercolor\, Gouache\, Acrylic Gouache\, and Watercolor Mediums\, as well as Legion’s 100% cotton Stonehenge Aqua White and Black papers\, Yupo White paper\, and an assortment of General Pencil materials. DESCRIPTION:Calligraphy Artwork Series\, Four Wednesdays \nNEW DATES: April 22\, 29\, May 6 & 13\, 9:30–11:30 AM \nThis four week  series is designed for students who want to create a finished calligraphy artwork built around a text of their choice—an excerpt\, poem\, lyric\, or personal phrase. The focus is on developing an original piece from idea to final presentation\, with guidance at each step. \nDuring the first class\, we will discuss the theme and idea for each student’s piece. Participants may choose a short text they would like to work with — for example\, a poem\, song lyrics\, or a quote that feels meaningful to them. We will talk about the mood and meaning they want to express through the work\, and begin looking at references and visual inspiration. \nIn the second class\, we will focus on sketches and composition. We will explore how to place the text on the page\, how to organize the layout\, and what expressive elements could be added. If a student wishes\, they may combine calligraphy with drawing\, watercolor\, or collage. If they do not have those skills\, that is absolutely fine — the text itself can become the main artistic element. \nIn the third class\, we will work on developing the artwork in its intended format and size. For example\, if the final piece will be created on A3 paper\, we will already begin sketching and practicing at that scale\, using the chosen style and composition. \nIn the final class\, students will create the finished artwork\, or complete the main part of it so they can finalize any remaining details at home. By the end of the series\, together with a few small homework assignments between classes\, each student should have a completed original calligraphy artwork. \nThe final piece can be small\, such as A3 size\, or larger if desired. We can also explore different materials\, such as colored paper — for example\, white gouache on a dark background can look especially striking. If a student already has calligraphy experience\, we can build on the scripts they know. If they do not\, we can work with their own natural handwriting as a starting point and transform it into a more expressive artistic piece. \nThe goal of the series is for each student to leave with a real finished artwork that reflects their personal idea and could be framed or submitted for exhibition.Across the series\, students will move through a structured creative process: selecting and refining text\, gathering visual references\, exploring layout and composition\, and producing sketches to test style\, spacing\, and rhythm. Students will then develop their strongest concept into a final finished artwork\, combining lettering with ink\, watercolor\, and expressive mark-making as desired. \nThe series supports both beginners and returning students. Her focus is always on color\, emotion\, and composition so that each cover not only stands out beautifully on digital storefronts but also connects instantly with the right readers. \nHer work has been exhibited at the United Nations\, where she was honored to perform live calligraphy and speak as part of their cultural programming. Today\, she also shares this craft through calligraphy workshops\, helping people discover the beauty of the written word and even creating custom commissions like family trees and marriage certificates. \nHer love for travel and exploring places with heart has led me to create illustrated maps — capturing food\, people\, and lifestyle with warmth\, detail\, and charm.

DESCRIPTION:Guided Tour: Tuesday\, March 24 at 2pm \n$35 for members\, $45 non-members \n(Space is limited) \nTour will last approximately one hour.  Register below and meet us at The Brant Foundation (421 East 6th Street\, NYC) at 1:50pm. \nJoin The Carriage Barn Arts Center for an exclusive group tour at The Brant Foundation’s East Village location (421 East 6th Street)\, the downtown neighborhood where a young Haring began his career.   \nRevisiting Haring’s formative years of 1980–1983\, the exhibition traces his meteoric rise from the subways of New York to international fame.   \nKeith Haring (American\, b. 1958\, d. 1990) remains one of the most celebrated and influential figures in American art\, renowned for breaking traditional art world boundaries and transferring the energy of the East Village’s streets to galleries. Emerging from the downtown New York subculture of the early 1980s\, Haring took inspiration from the everyday urban spaces he inhabited. From his spontaneous\, early-career chalk drawings in subway stations\, to his vibrant\, pop-inspired works that addressed social issues ranging from the AIDS epidemic to the drug crisis\, Haring shepherded a body of work that was both visually dynamic and socially engaged. \nCurator Dieter Buchhart cites the timelessness of Haring’s work as inspiration for the exhibition\, stating\, “Like a positive humanist virus\, Haring’s urban guerrilla art lives on in our collective memory\, fighting against ignorance\, fear\, and silence. His humanist code resonates with a universality that transcends time and place. And in the spirit of today’s Emoji euphoria\, we might well proclaim: For better or worse\, we are all speaking Haring now.” \nThroughout his career\, Haring crafted one of the most recognizable and celebrated artistic styles with a series of iconic symbols\, themes\, and motifs that permeated his work. It was this instantly identifiable and exuberant quality that helped drive the artist’s career. Crafted with baked enamel on metal\, his 1981 untitled work showing a pink smiling face serves as a predecessor to the digital age with its emoji-like iconography\, highlighting Haring’s desire for a universal system of communication. Haring’s frequently repeated symbols were a constant throughout his work\, which developed its own – almost geometric – language. In another untitled work from 1981\, the artist’s trademark dogs are seen in a scene filled with rhythm and infectious energy. Often acting as lively companions or symbolic messengers\, the dogs embody a playful pleasure in the show of shared experience. Surrounded by signature\, energetic lines\, the composition itself seems to vibrate with life. Haring’s mastery of space through line is demonstrated in the artist’s 1982 untitled work\, depicting a psychedelic Mickey Mouse\, through his ability to capture movement and subversive energy in fluid\, uninterrupted ink strokes. The painting stands out as an example of his playful takes on distinctly American imagery\, a recurring aspect of not only Haring’s works\, but Neo-Expressionists and Pop artists working in the same period like Jean-Michel Basquiat\, Kenny Scharf\, and Andy Warhol.  \n

DESCRIPTION:This playful\, process-focused workshop invites students to explore calligraphy beyond traditional letterforms. Through guided exercises with a cola pen and brush\, participants will experiment with pressure\, rhythm\, texture\, and mark-making to create expressive lines and unexpected surfaces. \nStudents will also work with unconventional tools—such as a dropper\, ruling pen\, and syringe—to produce layered effects\, splatters\, and dynamic strokes that are difficult to achieve with standard tools. The emphasis is on curiosity and exploration rather than perfection\, making this class especially supportive for loosening up\, building confidence\, and discovering a personal visual language. \nThis workshop is suitable for beginners. Her focus is always on color\, emotion\, and composition so that each cover not only stands out beautifully but also connects instantly with the right readers. \nBeyond illustration\, she is deeply passionate about calligraphy. Her work has been exhibited at the United Nations\, where she was honored to perform live calligraphy and speak as part of their cultural programming. DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, March 4th\, 10:30am-1pm \nDon't miss this special opportunity to join an exclusive tour with Jordan Hillman\, Bruce Museum associate curator\, of the Georges Braque exhibition\, followed by a private lunch at the museum. \n\n\nGeorges Braque (French\, 1882–1963) once confessed the urge "to touch a thing and not merely see it\,” an impulse that drove his career-long exploration of what he called “tactile space.” Defined by the artist as “the space that separates us from objects\, as opposed to visual space\, which separates objects from one another\,” tactile space was the basis of experiments Braque undertook with Pablo Picasso in the early twentieth century. Their collaboration led to the development of what became known as Cubism\, a style characterized by the compression of multiple perspectives\, the addition of collaged elements (papier collé)\, and the breakdown of forms into geometric shapes.  \nGeorges Braque: Tactile Space traces how Braque’s approaches to tactility\, materiality\, and space developed during his Cubist years (1908–1914) evolved over the next five decades. But the photographic innovations more than a century ago that made such things possible were experimental\, revelatory\, and sometimes dangerous―and many of the innovators\, entrepreneurs\, and inventors behind them were memorable eccentrics. In Flashes of Brilliance\, New York Times photo editor Anika Burgess engagingly blends art\, science\, and social history to reveal the most dramatic developments in photography from its birth in the 1830s to the early twentieth century deftly illustrating how the rise of a new art form transformed culture and our view of the world. \nAnika Burgess is a writer and photo editor. Students will learn how encaustic wax can be layered with photographs\, tinted with pigments\, and manipulated to create depth\, texture\, and luminous surfaces. \nEssential skills include proper photo preparation\, applying and fusing wax\, adding color\, and creating texture. We’ll also discuss heating methods\, safe handling of materials\, and where to source supplies so you can continue working on your own after class. \nBring any additional items you’d like to experiment with. After registering\, please email two photographs you’d like to use in class (landscape images are recommended).
