Art in the Windows, downtown New Canaan

Downtown New Canaan again became a town-wide art gallery for 14 days (May 9 – May 22, 2011) as the Carriage Barn Arts Center displayed the artwork of 65 artists in the windows of 54 stores along all of New Canaan’s busy retail streets, from Elm to Pine to Main Streets.  The fifth annual “Art in the Windows” Exhibition included watercolor, oil and acrylic paintings, drawing, mixed media, photography, printmaking, and sculpture in a range of styles by artists from Connecticut and New York.  Nineteen of the 65 participating artists were New Canaan residents.

The highpoint of the Exhibit was on Saturday, May 14, when many of the exhibiting artists worked “en plein air” throughout the day in front of the shops displaying their artwork.  The event included workshops for children run by artists and New Canaan High School students.

The downtown “Art in the Windows” event is a collaborative effort between local merchants and the New Canaan Society for the Arts.  Bärbel Green, the Exhibition’s organizer and owner of Bärbel Jewelry on Elm Street, said, “Once again, I am very grateful to the merchants for their enthusiastic response to ‘Art in the Windows.’ This special venue is a wonderful way to help raise essential funds for the Carriage Barn Arts Center and to raise awareness of the gallery and its member artists.”  Green, a trustee on the Board of the Carriage Barn, went on to say,  “This is the sort of enjoyable creative event that benefits the entire community, and I look forward to continuing this new tradition.”
