Reflections By Our Curator

2010-2011 Art Exhibitions at the Betty Barker Gallery

Reflecting on this past season as Exhibitions Director at the Carriage Barn, I have observed growth and fulfillment across the organization. The Betty Barker Gallery hosted six excellent exhibitions presenting a variety of thought provoking visual art to the community. Our professional art exhibitions would not be possible without the efforts of dedicated volunteers, local benefactors, supportive members and the Barn’s exuberant Board of Trustees.

In the fall of 2010, former Curator Cecelia Barnett led the Exhibition Team for the 2010 Annual Members’ Show and FARM! As the new Curator and Exhibitions Director at the Gallery, I organized the “Photography Show” in January of 2011. Board of Trustee members Barb Achenbaum (Secretary) and Neele-Banks Stichnoth liaisoned with the local high school in putting together Through our Eyes, a New Canaan High School Show, and MUD. 2011: A National Exhibition of High School Ceramics. Once again, Trustee Barbel Green organized the popular Art in the Windows in downtown New Canaan. Spectrum 2011 wrapped up the exhibition season.

Thank you to our Staff and Volunteers

Attending a reception at one of the Carriage Barn exhibitions, or viewing the gallery during normal gallery hours, one would hardly imagine the behind-the-scene effort that makes each show a seamless, professional event. The Board’s enthusiastic assistance is aided by our exhibition team, including invaluable Gallery Administrator Diane Hughes. Special thanks to all who helped with organization, installation and Receptions — and, most importantly, to the wonderfully dedicated volunteer members, including Norman Jensen, Erin Nazzaro, Mary Quinlin, Ceil Swift, Jackie Flatow, Mona McGreevy, Brian DeFreitus, Jaclyn Flatow, Karen E. Gersch, Norman Jensen, Mary Quinlan, Brad Shwidock, Ron Viesti, Jr., Barry Guthertz, Joan Bepler, Steve Hunter, George Baker, Margo Reynolds Packer, Christina Klumb, Jeanne McDonagh, Lisa Floryshak-Windman, and New Canaan High School students and their parents.

Why Our Members Belong

NCSA members are part of the organization for disparate reasons. Professional artists, amateurs, art patrons, and those seeking camaraderie – whatever compels each person to join, everyone shares the importance of the arts in our lives. The members recognize the magnificence of the Betty Barker Gallery’s location in a unique antique gem. The Carriage Barn is a spectacular exhibition space that continues to excite all who visit it in celebration of the arts. It greatly enhances the community. Hopefully, through the combined creative energy of all who are committed to furthering the Carriage Barn mission – to promote community interests through participation and appreciation of the visual and performing arts – we will continue to provide for the arts community. Thank you for your continued interest and support.
