Night Photography Workshop with Dr. Steven Labkoff

A special workshop on the eve of the full snow moon
Presentation at the Carriage Barn from 7-8pm followed by outdoor shooting in Waveny Park from 8-9:30pm

Night photography opens an entirely new domain to both the casual and professional photographer.  Come learn about the methods used to capture stunning photographs at night from award winning master photographer, Dr. Steven Labkoff.  Labkoff is a night and astrophotographer who’s been working in this space for nearly a decade.  He’s won numerous regional, national, and international awards for his night photography. In 2019, he took top honors at the Carriage Barn’s annual photography competition.  In 2023, he received his master’s degree in photography from the Professional Photographers of America.  

This workshop will be a combination of classroom discussion/training and an outdoor workshop to capture star trails and/or light trails.  We will discuss topics including: 

  • Target selection
  • Scouting
  • What’s the right photography (and other) gear
  • Information about light pollution and how to deal with it
  • Focusing at night
  • Light trail photography 
  • Star Trails photography
  • Safety when shooting at night
  • How to shoot objects such as the moon, stars, northern lights, and light trails

What you’ll need for this:

  • A mirrorless or DSLR camera, iPhone with long-exposure app such as Even Longer
  • A good, sturdy tripod
  • Shutter release (also known as a cable release or intervalometer)
  • For Star Trails, a wide-angle lens – at least 35mm or wider. Optimal would be 14-35 mm
  • For Light Trails, a standard 50mm or 70-200mm lens would be suggested
  • Winter clothing (Hat, gloves, coat, handwarmers…)
  • Optional: light pollution filter
     

Dr. Steven Labkoff is a Master photographer hailing from Stamford, Connecticut. He kindled his passion for photography at the tender age of 9 and been capturing life’s moments through his lens to offer his unique and captivating perspective ever since. His photographic images have earned him numerous awards and were included in publications spanning books, newspapers, and websites highlighting his craftsmanship across diverse genres.

Dr. Labkoff ‘s fine art and astrophotography, images consistently clinch top honors in national and international competitions. His work has been featured in exhibitions across three continents. Beyond the mesmerizing realms of astrophotography, Dr. Labkoff is also known for capturing the enchanting world of avian photography for which he has been recognized in international competitions. Five of his winning avian photographs grace this exhibit. 

In addition to astro and avian photography, Dr. Labkoff specializes also in macro, night, and long exposure photography.
