Guided Tour of The Harlem Renaissance and Transatlantic Modernism at the Met in NYC with Page Knox

Tuesday, April 23, 2024 from 12-1:30pm

Join us for a guided tour of the groundbreaking exhibition The Harlem Renaissance and Transatlantic Modernism at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.  Art historian and Columbia University Professor, Dr. Page Knox will lead this special visit at the Met on Tuesday, April 23rd at 12noon.

The Harlem Renaissance and Transatlantic Modernism opened in February with much publicity and critical acclaim.  Met insider Page Knox, who has presented lectures on the subject, will walk us through this exhibition of some 160 works of painting, sculpture, photography, film, and ephemera. This long overdue show explores the comprehensive ways in which Black artists portrayed everyday modern life during the 1920s – 40s in New York City’s Harlem and nationwide in the early decades of the Great Migration when millions of African Americans began to move away from the segregated rural South. The first art museum survey about the HarlemRenaissance in New York City since 1987, the exhibition – curated by Denise Murrell – establishes the Harlem Renaissance and its radically new development of the modern Black subject as central to the development of international modern art.

The group will meet in the lobby of the Metropolitan Museum of Art [1000 Fifth Avenue at 82nd Street, New York, NY] by 11:50am.

We recommend taking the following trains from CT to Grand Central:  from New Canaan – 9:38am (arrives 10:58)  OR from Darien – 9:52am (arrives 10:58am) or 10:18am (arrives 11:25am)  OR from Stamford -10:02am (arrives 10:58am), 10:05am (arrives 11:16am) or 10:28am (arrives 11:25am).
