About the Exhibition

This landmark exhibition marks the 250th anniversary of the births of J.M.W. Turner and John Constable—two of Britain’s most influential painters whose work changed the course of landscape art. Though often linked in history, the artists had distinctly different approaches: Turner’s radiant, atmospheric color and expressive energy contrasted sharply with Constable’s grounded naturalism and devotion to the English countryside. Their contemporaries famously described their artistic contrast as “fire and water.”

Turner & Constable: Rivals & Originals places their work in vivid dialogue, tracing how competition, admiration, and ambition fueled one of the most remarkable artistic rivalries of the 19th century.
On view at Tate Britain from November 27 through April 12.
