Mini Mahjong for Children aged 8 and up

Mini Mahjong for children aged 8 and up
Mondays, 4-5pm September 28-October 26 (excludes Columbus Day 10/12)
Come join this 4-week series, led by Lorin Dunphy of File Mile Mahj -introducing kids to the game of American mahjong in a fun, social, and skill-building environment. Each week builds on the last — from learning the tiles to playing full, independent games — so that by the end of the series, every child leaves as a confident mahjong player.
Mahjong is a wonderful way for kids to build pattern recognition, strategic thinking, patience, and social skills, all while having fun with friends around the table. This program is designed specifically for a young audience: engaging, hands-on, and paced to keep 8-12 year olds excited from week to week.
Week 1 — Welcome to the Table
Meet the tiles! Kids learn the parts of a mahjong hand, how to read the Mini Mahj card, and basic tile sorting and organization. We'll play simple matching and sorting games to build tile fluency in a low-pressure, high-fun way and start to play “messy mahj”. We will have fun mini prizes for the group each week.
Week 2 — Building a Hand
Building on tile fluency, kids learn how hands are structured, the concept of suits, dragons, and jokers, and how to start reading the card to plan a hand. Guided mini-games reinforce the concepts with lots of encouragement and laughter.
Week 3 — Let's Play!
Kids play their first full, simplified rounds of mahjong with instructor support at every table. We'll introduce basic strategy — when to keep a tile, when to let it go — and the etiquette of the game (calling tiles, taking turns, good sportsmanship). We will also start to introduce the National Mahjong League Card.
Week 4 — Mahj Masters
$240 per child for the 4 week session, please register below
The class will be limited to 12 children
