Ali Banisadr: The Alchemist

Come with us to the William Louis-Dreyfus Foundation for a tour of the extensive collection made up of pieces by contemporary, emerging and self-taught artists.  Louis-Dreyfus (1932–2016) was a poet, businessman, and committed art collector whose collection of close to 4,000 works represents over 50 years of discovery and dedication. Shaped by curiosity, an open mind, and a lifelong fascination with the power of visual media, the collection is remarkable for its depth and diversity.

Works were acquired in America and Europe and range from oil paintings, watercolors, and drawings to large-scale and multi-figured sculptures. From Alberto Giacometti, Bill Traylor, and Catherine Murphy to Thornton Dial, Red Grooms, and Nicola Hicks, Louis-Dreyfus’s selections avoided the influence of trends and media favorites and were instead based on the originality, inspiration, and sense of invention he saw in the works of artists he admired.

We will then enjoy lunch and a visit to the Katonah Museum of Art (about 10 minutes away) where we will tour the new Ali Banisadr exhibition which encompasses nearly twenty years of the artist’s singular practice, across the mediums of painting, drawing, printmaking and sculpture.

Ali Banisadr: The Alchemist is the first major U.S. museum survey of the Brooklyn-based, Iranian-born artist Ali Banisadr.  Known for his dynamic blend of abstraction and figuration, Banisadr creates paintings that reflect both chaos and order. His work is deeply influenced by his sensory experiences, particularly synesthesia, which allows him to “hear” colors and “see” sounds. This unique perspective shapes his exploration of history, politics, and the human condition through vibrant compositions.
