The third annual “Capturing New Canaan” Exhibit (October 22 – November 4) features a community competition & showcase of photographs of the New Canaan Sculpture Trail, created in partnership with the New Canaan Land Trust.
Featuring a selection of images by the Sculpture Trail’s official photographer Elaine Lloyd, the showcase also includes sixteen juried photographs submitted online and selected by the exhibition committee.

Exhibition Selection Committee:
Phil Nelson, and his Stamford-based business Phil Nelson Photography, is best known for his landscape photography which brilliantly blends art and technology.
Jeanne McDonagh, a longstanding (and beloved) faculty member of New Canaan High School has single-handedly inspired hundreds of students throughout the past three decades in her digital arts classes.
Jeanna Shepherd, resident of New Canaan and Martha’s Vineyard, is a professional photographer and photojournalist who specializes in scenic seaside photography, in addition to being a frequent contributor to the Vineyard Gazette.
Elaine Lloyd, a New Canaan resident, took on the role as the photographer of the Sculpture Trail in early April when the first work, Thomas S. Berntsen’s Passages, was installed in the Hannan-Eberstadt Field. Since then, Elaine has taken hundreds of photographs that capture the beauty of the eight Sculpture Trail works. An investment banker by training, over the past 10 years Elaine has transformed her avocation for photography into a professional pursuit. As part of the upcoming exhibition, Elaine will select her favorite 10 to 15 photographs to display.
Photographers of all ages and experience – from students to aspiring amateurs and professionals — are encouraged to submit photographs of any of the Sculpture Trail works to be included in an online gallery.
– Photos must be submitted by September 30 to be considered for the competition
– First, second and third places will be awarded for adult and student categories
– Selected photographers will be responsible for printing, pricing, mounting/framing the work to hang in the gallery. Exhibited photographs will be on display and available for purchase during the exhibit.
– There is no fee to submit photographs for consideration
Carriage Barn Executive Director Hilary Wittmann explained, “We’re excited to highlight the New Canaan Sculpture Trail installations during our third annual “Capturing New Canaan” Exhibit. She continued, “The variety found in these eight sculptures – in material, formats, locations and unique interaction with its surroundings — offer diverse and exciting opportunities for photographic expression.”

The New Canaan Sculpture Trail
The New Canaan Sculpture Trail, the Land Trust’s and Carriage Barn’s inaugural outdoor art exhibition, showcases eight juried-works of temporary sculpture placed throughout New Canaan. The sites of the sculptures include six Land Trust preserves, New Canaan Town Hall and the front courtyard of the Carriage Barn. The four-month sculptural exhibition opened on June 19th and runs through October 31st.
