Monaco Grand Prix Fundraiser-–Purchase Tickets Here
The New Canaan Society for the Arts, Inc. (NCSA) is excited to announce its 2015 Annual Fundraiser, Monaco Grand Prix, on Saturday, May 16, 2015, as part of the spring art show, Va Va Vroom! The Art of the Vehicle. We expect 220 guests to enjoy a special evening of themed food and music at the Carriage Barn Arts Center, an exceptional gallery space in a unique nineteenth-century stone barn in Waveny Park. The evening’s success will help fund growing partnerships with our local schools and expanded educational programming for adults and children. Fundraiser proceeds will also support exhibition design and gallery enhancement. Our goal this year is to raise $50,000.
Va Va Vroom! The Art of the Vehicle Art Exhibition
This art show celebrates the history of the 19th century Carriage Barn Arts Center in Waveny Park, New Canaan. The Carriage Barn, which was restored by the Lapham family in 1913, originally housed horses, carriages, and cars. The Lapham family also had airplanes and a variety of vehicles on their Waveny estate. The exhibit will include a curated section on the history of vehicles at Waveny. Interestingly, Christopher Lloyd, the Hollywood actor, grew up at Waveny and starred in the film Back to the Future, which featured the DeLorean car.
Works in all media will focus on the various modes of transportation, from the past to the present. The design of cars and motorcycles is an art form in itself and its aesthetic qualities have inspired artists for generations. The cross-pollination of disciplines, i.e., art and science /engineering, has resulted in significant inventive designs. Approximately 90 works, including three vintage motorcycles from a private collection and vintage racing posters, will be displayed. An interdisciplinary lecture series and children’s workshops will highlight different aspects of the exhibit.
This season approximately 200 people have attended our Opening Receptions, while close to 500 attend each show. Programs relating to the show will include an artists’ talk, a lecture, and a symposium. Educational youth programs include tours for local school children and underserved children as well as children’s art workshops.
