The first museum of strictly American art in the country, the collection spans four centuries of American history, and is renowned for its colonial portraiture, the Hudson River School, American Impressionism, and the Ash Can School. The museum contains more than 8,400 paintings, works on paper, sculptures, videos and photographs.
In addition to a guided tour of the highlights of the permanent collection, we will visit current exhibitions including Vic Muniz: Extra Ordinary. This major mid-career retrospective canvasses more than twenty-five years of Muniz’s work to transform the ordinary into the extraordinary.
Brett Abbott is a specialist in twentieth and twenty-first century American photography. Prior to joining the NBMAA he spent five years at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, where he served as Keough Family Curator of Photography and Head of Collections, and nine years at the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles. Among his many awards are the Ansel Adams Fellowship for work on Wynn Bullock at the Center for Creative Photography, and two Lucie Awards for Curator/Exhibition of the Year.
After the tour, our group will enjoy lunch at the museum café before returning home.
