Let’s Play Ukulele with Michael-Louis Smith
Four Sundays: March 15, 22, 29, April 12
from 5-6:15pm
Want to learn a new instrument? In this workshop for adults, children, teens and families, you’ll learn chords and strumming techniques for the ukulele! Led by local musician and instructor Michael-Louis Smith, this series is ideal for interested learners aged 6 and up. Some ukuleles will be available, or bring your own.
Part I – Learning The Instrument :
Begin by identifying the parts of the ukulele, learn the names of the strings, and where notes are located on the instrument.
Part II – Playing Chords and Strumming:
Jump right into playing chords! We will use chord diagrams which will show us where to place our fingers to make basic chords. Attendees will also learn some simple strumming patterns.
Part III – Playing Scales and Melodies:
Focus on playing scales. We will learn to play a basic scale in the first position and use that knowledge to make familiar melodies.
Part IV -Putting It All Together:
Now it’s time to use everything we have learned and play some songs!

Musician, composer and educator Michael-Louis Smith received his Masters in Music from the Conservatory of Music at Purchase College (NY) and has two decades of experience as a music instructor, recording artist and performer. In 2001 Michael founded MLS Music Lessons which provides in-home and remote instruction for all ages in piano, guitar, ukulele, electric bass, songwriting/composition, music theory and more.

I wish for my students to feel the immense joy and satisfaction I’ve gained from over 20 years of composing, performing, rehearsing and recording music. I strive to create a learning environment that focuses on the fun and enjoyment of playing music, while giving each student the highest level of education and training I can offer. I have created my own style of educating that engages students and inspires confidence, discipline, and creativity. I truly believe that making music enriches the human experience and makes the world a better place.
