Bruce Museum Tour of Current Exhibitions: David Hockney, Tracing Lineage, and Photographic Revolutionaries

February 28 @ 10:30 am - 12:00 pm

Guided Tour of Current Exhibitions at the Bruce Museum in Greenwich

Wednesday, February 28th at 10:30am

Join us for a guided visit highlighting three current exhibitions at the Bruce Museum: Hockney/Origins – Early Works from the Roy B. and Edith J. Simpson Collection, Tracing Lineage: Abstraction and its Aftermath, and Photographic Revolutionaries of Group f/64 (Works from the Bank of America Collection).

Don’t miss this opportunity for a close look at these special exhibitions. Hockney/Origins: Early Works from the Roy B. and Edith J. Simpson Collection examines the early period of Hockney’s career in depth, from his time as a student at the Royal College of Art in London during the early 1960s to his formative years in the 1970s.

Tracing Lineage draws works from the Museum’s holdings and augmented by key loans from private collections, bringing together nearly twenty-five paintings, sculptures, and mixed-media works by artists working from the late 1950s to the present day. The exhibition explores concurrent and overlapping themes, including gesture, process, geometry, and materiality.  Artists included in this show range from Helen Frankenthaler and Lynda Benglis to Ron Gorchov and Rashid Johnson.

Photographic Revolutionaries refers to the Group f/64, an informal association of Bay Area photographers including Ansel Adams, Immogen Cunningham and Edwards Weston. The group was established as a challenge to Pictorialism, a popular movement on the West Coast, which favored painterly, hand-manipulated, soft-focus prints, often made on textured papers. This small association of innovators named their organization Group ƒ/64 after the large-format camera aperture, which produces the maximum depth of field so that everything from the immediate foreground to the distant background is in sharp focus.

Attendees will meet at the Bruce Museum, 1 Museum Drive, Greenwich, CT 06830.  Participants will have the option to visit other exhibitions on view or stay for lunch after the tour at The Bruce Café, run by Aux Délices.
